Chapter Seven

The front door slammed, and Harmony leaned against it, heart racing.

Nothing in life had prepared her for this.

These emotions, the way she physically reacted anytime she was close to David Navarre, the indescribable kisses he rained down upon her—it was more fantastical than anything her mother had spoken of from her books!

And he was falling in love with her.

David Navarre, the most impressive musician she had ever heard, one of the few people who made her feel completely comfortable in their presence—he was falling in love with her.

Harmony had never planned to tell David how she felt about him, but that moment in Queen’s Park was not one anyone could predict.

Her heart rate was slowing now, but her breath was still short. It had taken everything within her not to kiss him again when he had bid her farewell just moments ago, at the front door of her home. They had no plans to meet again, but it would be soon. It surely could not be long before she caught sight of those gray eyes again—though perhaps she would hear the lilting of his piccolo before she saw him.

Harmony sighed with a smile. Nothing could destroy this moment. Nothing at all.

“I don’t understand, why have we not heard about this sooner?”

Harmony looked, startled, at the door to the drawing room. That was her mother’s voice, but so unlike her. Instead of the dreamy vagueness her mother was so well known for, it was sharp and forceful and scared.

“There was no need to tell you sooner,” was the reply, spoken by a voice Harmony did not recognize.

The door was closed, but the voices were so loud, she could not help but hear them. There seemed to be someone pacing in the room. What was going on?

“That’s your job,” her father’s voice said curtly. “You are our solicitor, our advisor—that is exactly what we pay you to do. Advise!”

“Advice cannot be given before the situation is fully understood,” countered the unknown voice. “As with all matters of this sort, it is best and prudent to wait for the dust to settle before any of our clients are informed.”

“Yet this has lost us time!”

Harmony had never heard her father speak in such a way. Life’s problems did not seem to bounce off him, as such; they never seemed to reach him at all.

When his brother, her Uncle William, and his wife, Leonora, had thought that they may lose their twin girls at birth, her father had not been concerned. It had been as though he just knew that they would survive. His compassion was for his brother and his wife and the visit that he had paid them had gone down in family history.

Turning up with a bottle of brandy to christen Isabella and Katarina, he had apparently seemed confused when Leonora was crying, telling her there was nothing at all to worry about.

He sounded worried now.

“The facts,” her father demanded. “The absolute facts, give them to us now. Better late than never, Mr.
